In der Klasse 7 beschäftigten sich die Schülerinnen und Schüler mit Schneckenhäusern. Das kleine Zuhause der Weinbergschnecken entdeckten sie als kunstvolles Gebäude, das Streifen für Streifen in Jahre langer Arbeit von den Bewohnern um den Leib gebaut wird – ohne Architekt und Handwerker. Wie schwierig es ist, dieser Bauweise nachzuspüren, erkannten die Schüler, als sie eine Bleistiftzeichnung anfertigen sollten, die Konstruktion und Struktur der Wände zeigen sollte: Ein Spindelbau, der in unserer Architektur sehr selten vorkommt. Beim Nachbau der Bleistiftzeichnung musste die Hand sehr sicher und langsam vorgehen, denn das Blech nahm jeden Ausrutscher übel. Um das Relief der Wölbung eines Schneckenhauses möglichst ähnlich zu gestalten, wurde das Blech von vorne und von hinten bearbeitet. Zuerst entstand auf der Vorderseite eine Spirale, danach wurden die feinen Riefen von hinten eingedrückt. Durch das Eindrücken wurde das Blech immer fester und hatte zum Schluss die Robustheit eines natürlichen Schneckenhauses.
Students of Year 7 worked with snail shell recently. They discovered the little home of Burgundy snail as a beautifully crafted building, which forms stripe after stripe over the years around the body of its inhabitant without any architect or craftsman. When students were asked to create a line drawing which show construction and structure of the walls they found out how difficult it is to get into the way the shell is built. It’s a building formed like a spindle, a form which is rarely found in architecture. Then students were asked to replicate their line drawings in on sheets of metal. Careful working was important because errors were hard to correct. To recreate the relief of the concavity of the snail shell close to the original the metal sheet was worked from front to back. First the front side of the spiral was created, then fine striae were pressed in from the backside. Through denting the metal sheet got sturdier and sturdier until it finally gained the robustness of a real snail shell.
